Titan Comics continues to roll out new and exciting adventures with the Twelfth Doctor in the Year Two Series.  Released last week, Invasion of the Mindmorphes, sees the Doctor take on two different companions that may have come from Titan Comic itself.

The opening pages begin with not the adventures of the Doctor and his latest companion, but that of two travellers, the Time Surgeon and Nurse Kara—who look strangely familiar.  While it seems both the Doctor and this companion may have gotten a make-over, we soon learn these two are the creation of two of the biggest in the comic book business, writer and illustrator, Sonny Robinson and Val Kent.

With Sonny and Val ready to interact and meet fans at a Comic Book Convention, they soon find themselves on the TARDIS and out of time when the Doctor, a little vexed of his alter-ego, decides to give the two storytellers their own adventures in time and space, while working on his skills in interaction by playing matchmaker.

Between visiting the Jurassic period, Abraxas Manta Whales, colliding galaxies, an oasis of M’noa, and a ride with Kangastangs, the travellers meet unexpected dangers on Zarma…were our story will continue.

Titan continues to produce top-notch comics. Writer Robbie Morrison captures the voice and tone of the Twelfth Doctor that makes it feel that the storyboard could be interchanged with the television screen.  Artist, Rachael Stott, draws one of the most convincing and real images of Twelve, while her Surgeon and Kara hold enough resemblance to the original characters that the image of an actual ‘punk’ Twelve gives this story the right twist. Colourist Rod Fernandes brings the story to light with vibrant colouring in all the right places.

Twelve’s Red Velvet jacket looks as sharp as the real thing and the glow of the central TARDIS lights and depth make it look truly bigger on the inside, even in a small rectangular frame.

The story continues in part 2. With this team at the helm, readers can only expect another great adventure.

  1. When Year 2 began, it was mentioned in a number of places that Titan was going to feature the Series 9 Doctor and Clara team throughout the year. Sadly, for whatever reason – maybe BBC Worldwide said no – Clara was dropped from the comic (as well as DWM’s comic strip) abruptly after an amazing multi-chapter story and a one-off called The Fourth Wall. I was overjoyed to see Clara return – even if only in this “comic within a comic” form and to have Rachael Stott draw her and Twelve together again is a real treat. I hope there’s more in Part 2 – including I hope a direct Clara reference if the Doctor asks where Kara came from. Incidentally, this is not the first time we’ve seen Time Surgeon and Kara. Apparently – and I have to get hold of the comic again but according to the TARDIS Data Core wiki this is the case – images of Time Surgeon are also visible in “The Fourth Wall”.

Fans of Twelve/Clara will want to get issue #15 for certain as its cover art is a fantastic portrait of the two of them.
