This month’s Big Finish offering for the Doctor Who main range is definitely a standout adventure double bill which mixes the values of the classic series with story ideas of New Who.
In ‘Vortex Fire’ from the pen of Jonathan Morris, The Doctor and Flip land the TARDIS in a mining cave which is currently being explored but more is found than was bargained for. Just who is it in the ice….? Some people maybe remember a previous Doctor Who story “The Wrong Doctors” this story is similar in parts as things start to get very timey wimey.
Cortex Fire by Ian Potter takes you to a typical futuristic city with A.I. gone wrong. When the Doctor takes Flip to see a fireworks display that she will never forget, everything, of course, goes wrong. With the Doctor being blamed for an explosion and Flip injured in the hospital you wonder if things could get any worse.
Quality Production & Performances
The Doctor and flip’s relationship is a certainly a standout part. They work really well together and it would be nice to see more of this TARDIS team in the future. Colin Baker and Lisa Greenwood succeed in bringing this amazing duo back to our ears. The supporting cast of this episode are also outstanding, Shobu Kapoor fits in well with this TARDIS team.
The production qualities of the recording are also at a high Big Finish standard, that sometimes leaves you thinking you are stuck in a collapsing tunnel!
Together Vortex Ice and Cortex Fire make for wonderful listening with complex themes that are simple enough to understand on first listening although may be better appreciated on a second. Jonathan Morris brings back Doctor Who to its most complex form but simplified to the extent that it is still enjoyable while Ian Potter concentrates on something that can often be overlooked, the characters.

Vortex Ice by Jonathan Morris
In search of ‘exotic particles’, the Doctor and Flip arrive 700 feet underground, in a mine in Northern Mexico – only to run into a scientific expedition. Among their number, an exobiologist. They’re all on the hunt for alien life! Deep underground, the team finally uncovers a cave of vast crystals – like ice, despite the heat. And inside the crystal: something frozen. Something trapped in time. If only it were something simple, like a monster. But it’s far, far worse than that.
Cortex Fire by Ian Potter
The Doctor brings Flip to the futuristic city of Festin, the best vantage point to witness a unique astronomical light show. In a city governed by the all-powerful network known as the Cortex, they’re soon identified as outsiders – nihilists, perhaps, responsible for a wave of terror that’s been sweeping the city… But the truth is different. The people of Festin are burning up. Spontaneously combusting. And no-one knows why.
